Green Clue
The song begins with a funk rhythm played by the rhythm guitar, using two different D minor voicings approached chromatically in sixteenth notes (Hogarth, 2018). The song has a tempo of 190 BPM.
In the second section, the composition moves into Section A, where it modulates to C Major. This section features a different ending in the last four measures of each repetition. During the second pass, a chain of dominant chords begins with D minor, interpreted as the ii chord in C major, and moves to G7, which functions as the dominant of C. This is followed by a sequence of secondary dominants—F#7–B7–E7–A7—which ultimately resolves to Dmaj7, establishing D major as the tonal center of this section.
Section B is clearly centered on D major. However, in the third and fourth measures, a ii–V–I progression appears but, rather than providing a final resolution, it leads to E7, initiating another harmonic movement. The last two measures contain another ii–V progression that would normally resolve to F#, but instead resolves deceptively to A, the dominant chord of D minor, anticipating the return to the original tonal center.
After Section B, the song returns to Section A, introducing a bass solo accompanied by syncopated guitar chords. The solo extends through both Sections A and B before reaching the final vamp, where the rhythmic motif from the introduction is repeated, accompanied by a funk bass line and a guitar solo.
